Eco brushes

Turn heads at your Christmas party with the best ethical products, accessories and some handy style tips too.

It’s difficult to know where all the products we use come from; most girls couldn’t count the amount of hair stuff they have stashed away in their bathroom. But for Christmas, treat your hair to something organic, fair trade and cruelty free. Here are a few that Daisy’s picked out:

1 Eco Brush Mini Radial Brush (Main image)
£4.00 from Tesco

Small enough to fit in your handbag, the Eco Brush is a little godsend if you’re on a night out. The collection of five different brushes are made from bamboo rather than wood, a resource that takes a fraction of the time to renew. The narrow head on this one is perfect for styling short to medium hair.

2 John Masters Dry Hair Nourishment & Defrizzer
£16.00 for 15 ml from www.johnmasters.co.uk

Made purely from plant and essential oils, this tames the dreaded frizz and smooths split ends with just a couple of drops.

The moisturising quality will leave your locks silky enough to flick around and as it’s made using organic ingredients and stands against animal testing, you’ll feel beautiful inside and out.

3 Ginger Anti Dandruff Shampoo
£5.35 for 250ml www.bodyshop.com

Get the gorgeous scent of Christmas every time you lather up with this ginger-infused shampoo. The ginger, along with Community Trade honey, birch bark, white willow and oak moss all work towards a healthier scalp, so there’ll be no pesky flakes ruining your Christmas look.

4 Cottonseed Curl Boost
£6.85 for150ml from www.bodyshop.com

One for those blessed with a head of curls, this will help to control them with a lovely natural product geared especially for you. It adds bounce, smooths frizz and it’s full of natural ingredients like cotton seed oil, maize and Community trade honey.

So you can help preserve the forest, give the beekeepers a decent wage and look fabulous all at the same time.

5  Aveda Phomillient Styling Foam (Volumising) and Pure Abundance Volumising Hair Spray
£12.72 for 200 ml and £14.68 for 200 ml fromwww.aveda.co.uk

Texture and volume is bang on trend at the minute. Do it like Christian Dior in his Spring 2010 catwalk and bring some real retro volume back (check out Michelle’s tips). So if the winter months have left your hair limp, try sexing it up a bit with specialised volumising products like these from Aveda.

The styling foam includes yummy certified organic honey, burdock and marshmallow root, adding shine as well as boosting.

Hair spray is a girl’s best friend when it comes to pumping up the volume and this micro-mist is made with certified organic acacia gum (a natural bulking agent), for a style-expanding, extra-firm hold.

Use the spray while your hair is nearly dry to make it obedient as you finish blow-drying. Then with bit of backcombing at the roots you’re ready for Christmas!

If you want to really stand out from the crowd, add some individuality to your hairdo by accessorising with a beautiful hand made headpiece or clip. These are two of my favourites for Christmas …

6 Heathers Headjunc Burlesque-like HairHeart
£15.00 from www.extinctdesign.co.uk

This gorgeous headpiece is hand made using vintage, recycled and remnant fabrics. It can be made in any colour you like but this vibrant red looks fabulously festive this time of year. The heart is velvet, with a silver bow and cute striped rosett ribbon.

7  Amelie Hair Clip, Enamore Accessories by Catarina Vassalo
£14.00 from www.enamore.co.uk

The demure Amelie hair clip is made using fabric cut-offs, so you can champion recycling and accessorise your hair. The monochrome look is very Parisian-chic, bringing out your inner Coco Chanel! Handmade to order, it also makes an adorable gift.

Michelle Fowler of Minx hair design gives us tips on how to create full volume curls with a Red Carpet wow factor:

1. Using heated rollers set the hair using a setting lotion or a mouse, allow hair to cool completely before removing the rollers to set the curl in place. (tighten loose curls with your straightening or curling iron)

2. Tease your fingers through the hair gently to break up any roller lines, then using your fingers take a 1 inch section gently from around the ear area and using a Bobbie pin secure the section from right to left toward the centre of the head, just below the crown.

Next take another 1 inch section (you can lightly twist the section if you would like a softer look) and pin it slightly off centre. Continue with the sections on a diagonal line until you have taken the hair right up to the nape of the neck. Be careful to make sure you are covering your pins with the next section of hair.

If you are wanting to soften the side you are taking the hair from leave some small tendrils out when pinning your sections.

3.  Softly tease the hair into position at the side which you have allowed to cascade over your shoulder. Use a firm hold hairspray to keep the curl in place whilst allowing the hair to be able to move and not appear too structured.

This is so easy to create yourself at home but still has impact and glamour. Guaranteed to impress.
