Ethical beauty on your high street
What to buy where and why
We love our small, independent retailers at Daisy Green. We believe ethics should run through the veins of the company, affecting every link of the supply chain.
But the fact remains that if we are going to change the world, we need to get the big guys on board.
The best way to do this is to buy the ethical products that they do stock on the high street, giving out a clear message about what the consumer wants. And with our purses squeezed more then ever, there are some welcome bargains to be had.
Here are some of the ones we’ve found. This list is by no means exhaustive and we’d love to hear your recommendations and views. Scroll down to get to the comments box.
Boots the Chemist
The Naked range is 97 per cent natural and free from sodium lauryl sulphate, parabens and petrochemicals. Ethically sourced ingredients are used ‘wherever possible’. It includes a good selection of hair and skin care.
Larger stores also stock Burts Bees, one of Daisy’s favourites.
Marks and Spencer
Various ‘green’ products including the Eco range featuring facial tissues and personal care products, Naturally Derived toiletries and the Natural Beauty line ‘made in Devon containing selected organic ingredients. Free from synthetic preservatives, harsh ingredients, mineral oils or artificial colours.’
Tesco
The BNatural range is selection of 50 products, all priced under £10. They are free from parabens and sodium lauryl sulphate, with some organic ingredients.
Oxfam
Its Faith in Nature range is the ultimate high street feel good buy. The products are naturally preserved, without sodium laureth sulphate, free of synthetic colouring or fragrance, free of animal ingredients and are not animal tested. Many of the products are under a fiver and they benefit Oxfam.
Sainsburys
The Organic You bath and skincare collection claims to be free from artificial ingredients and chemicals with each product created with mainly organic ingredients. It also has the seal of approval from the Soil Association. All items are less than £10.
Waitrose
Its Waitrose Organic collection contains a broad selection of toiletries, all with a high percentage of organic ingredients. Claims to be ‘commited to natural products and protecting the environment.’
Lush
All products are made from organic fruit and vegetables and ‘safe synthetics’. The store uses little or no preservatives, minimal packaging and no animal ingredients.
The Body Shop
The Body Shop is committed ‘to seeking and sustaining natural materials and ingredients, and using all our planet’s resources wisely.’, striving ‘to treat all people in a fair and open fashion, to respect and value their integrity.’ None of its products are tested on animals.

Marks and spencers seem to of stopped their natural beauty range which was made in Devon – it’s a shame as the shower gel, body scrub and botter butter were fab. They still do do natural shampoo, handwash etc found usually near the household items, but it is made in China so how green it is with all the air mails is questionable.
Mand S have just relaunched their Natural Beauty range – it includes a moisturiser this time and isn’t as strongly scented.
