Leaf mould and jute bags

A great way to rot down leaves and how I'm improving my composting cocktail

I met the lovely Jane from Nether Wallop Trading Company at UK Aware at the weekend. They sell the very handy wooden paper pot making kits that I’ve mentioned before.

At UK Aware, one of the items they were showing was a clever biodegradable Jute bag.

These are really cool bags made from Jute that you can stuff with leaves, and then the whole thing biodegrades into yummy leaf mould. Jane gave me one to test, so I’ve stuffed it with leaves and it’s sitting on a raised bed, waiting to rot down – watch this space.

On a related note, I’ve decided to mix some grass cuttings in with my manure. My neighbours kindly contributed a huge bin full of cuttings and I’ve liberally spread them through not only my manure but my other two compost bins.

I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.
