Choolips puts the sunshine back into the UK’s high street

New collection and website for the fairly traded label loved by Topshop

Sep 28th, 2009

SusiepostcardWith a couple of successful ‘Exclusives’ for Topshop under its belt, this autumn Choolips stepped out on the catwalk with its 3rd ‘Golden Coast’ collection.

The collection of girlish playful dresses dabbles in the Exotic Gardens of India and the soul of Ghana’s streets.

We’re big fans of Choolips and you can read our interview with its founder here and our encounter with Choolips at London Fashion Week here.

A hint of 1930’s chic underlined their latest collection with glowing colours and exotic repeat prints, carves out Choolip’s award-winning ethical signature – fairly traded dresses with cutting edge style.

Subtle pleats, ties and bows add highlights to the pretty repeat prints and romantic on-trend silhouettes.

Adding to this array of dazzling colours and shapes Choolips is also launching its website for you to get your own personal preview of the collections. Now online you can visit the brand on www.choolips.com to read background stories, find stockists and of course indulge in beautiful pictures.

Choolip’s colourful designs are printed on 100% Ghanaian cotton using the local Batik tradition. Entirely made in Ghana by local batikers, tailors and seamstresses, all of whom earn eleven times the average national wage for their work.

Choolips has introduced new technology and trend-led print design to sustain this ancient Batik technique. Introducing new materials and technology to Ghanaian workers has pioneered local design processes and working methods. This, in turn, has furthered local businesses both in the UK and at grass roots level in Ghana.

Since Choolips started working with batiker Juliana Mustapha, Juliana has tripled both her workforce and the size of her workshop while she secures the education of her three children. She is now one of few small producers in Ghana that are successfully exporting to international markets.

Founder Annegret is a ‘UK Young Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year 2009’ finalist with the British Council and winner of ‘Barclays Innovative Business of the Year 2008’.

Following extensive research trips to the African continent, Annegret entered a collection in the ‘Design4LifeGhana’ competition with the Ethical Fashion Forum, winning Choolips the ‘Best Global Commercial Design and Print’ and the attention of Topshop’s buying team. They were so impressed by her designs that they bought the collection, and have been champions of the brand ever since.
