Richard Briers is joining the campaign against another runway at Heathrow by sending carrots to the Cabinet.

The acclaimed actor, best remembered for his role as Tom in the 70s sustainable sitcom, The Good Life said: ‘I’ve always thought that the best way to get someone to change their mind is to use the carrot rather than the stick.’

‘On Tuesday I was down at the Airplot in Sipson, helping to dig over the new allotment, and planting some organic carrot seeds. After they’ve grown I’m going to send a runway carrot once a year to every member of the cabinet. I’m hoping they’ll become so attached to them that they’ll drop their plans for Heathrow expansion.

‘This new runway is just such a daft idea. It’s obvious to everyone who digs a garden that the climate is already changing, and things are set to get even worse, so why make Heathrow the biggest single emitter of CO2 in the country?

I know my carrots alone won’t stop the Government, but they’ll be very tasty indeed and this is my way of doing something to block the new runway.

Mr Briers is urging others to come on board:

‘I’d like you to extend the carrot of friendship to your local politicians. If MPs and candidates join you and me as owners of the Airplot, they’ll be showing real leadership in nailing their colours to the mast and demonstrating that there are plenty of people across all parties who don’t want the third runway either.’
