Southend YMCA opens groundbreaking new concept store
Showcasing young designers' collections
Oct 28th, 2009
Southend YMCA has opened a groundbreaking new concept store called ‘ETC’, giving young designers the chance to create, showcase and sell their collections.
The shop redefines the traditional image of a secondhand shop to combine the ‘Mary Queen of Charity Shops‘ ethos with the current trend of pop-up shops to provide a platform for young creatives.
Southend YMCA held its first fashion show on 25 October to the unanimous approval of a packed house.
Hosted by BBC Radio presenters Mike Bromfield and Ollie Winiberg, the event took place in the new ‘YMCA etc’ vintage, charity shop in Southend. Entry to the event was free, but guests were asked to bring one unwanted item of clothing to gain entry.
The event was held to raise awareness about what the Southend YMCA can offer young people and to showcase local talent. Designers included Holly Walker, Joey Bevan, Caron Brandajs, Sarah Watkins, Sian D’more and The Deanes School fashion club formed by tutor, Alison Ansary. In December, the designers will be in residence at YMCA Etc shop, selling clothes from their collections
‘YMCA etc’, is a shop which is a social enterprise project that operates as a real business for young people. The idea is to give young people aged between 16 and 25 hands on experience of all areas of business from retail and customer service to marketing, design, promotion, PR and advertising to customer care, catering and stocktaking. It’s an initiative to nurture and facilitate entrepreneurialism and creativity in young people and help equip them better for employment by giving them CV building experience and increase self confidence.
In the current ‘internship – culture’ the shop provides mini internships and opportunities for nurturing young creatives and entrepreneurs.
Southend YMCA have lots of opportunities for young people to get involved. Anyone interested to find out more can call 01702 301301or email contact@deliciouspr.com. YMCA etc is at 4a Southchurch Road Southend-On-Sea Essex SS1 2NE.

It is very good to see that the town is being used effectively to help give young people a direction and help in getting focused on what they really want to do. I think more dis-used shops could be used for similar ideas.
The Fashion Show was a good idea to launch the shop and it ideas and I was glad to be invited to the event.
I am especially pleased that you have used some of the photographs I took Including the one on the main page.
