A new magazine report has named and shamed Britan’s worst performing clothes shops when it comes to the workers making their clothes.
Ethical Consumer commended Monsoon and M&S for being streets ahead of the rest of the high street stores. It also lamented the huge gap between the best and worst performers on ethical issues on the high street.
Report author, Rob Harrison, said, ‘It’s shocking that despite the ongoing pressure from campaigners, there are still companies who appear not to have any policies in place to prevent abuses by suppliers.’
It’s not all bad news. The report found that there has been an explosive growth in the ethical clothing market with a huge increase in ethical fashion companies propelled by an ongoing demand by shoppers for Fairtrade and organic clothing.
The report namechecks 18 of the UK’s most ethical fashion companies, recommending them all as alternatives to the high street.
So, it’s never been easier to find fashion with a heart.
The eighteen companies were:
- Bishopston Trading
- Natural Clothing Company
- Gossypium
- Traidcraft
- Ascension
- THTC
- Enamore
- Frank & Faith
- Greenfibres
- HUG
- TRAIDremade
- Adili
- Ciel
- Edun
- People Tree
- Kuyichi
- Patagonia
- Seasalt
