What’s new in the City – May

Discounts, jeans, elephants, shoes and gum. Lupe Castro fills us in on everything ethical we need to know this month

Although a couple of gorgeous days managed to filter through at the beginning of May, the only fantastic colours are from the flamboyant array of elephants scattered through the capital.

No, I’m not going crazy! Check out my truly smart local one painted by Tommy Hilfiger,  located just outside Sheekeys restaurant in Covent Garden. It’s part of an event organised by elephantfamily.org trying to keep the Asian elephant from extinction.

On 3 July they are all going to be auctioned off, but there are loads of events including a meet the artists day on 22 May so visit elephantparadelondon.org and download a route map and timetables.

Talking about the streets and stuff, getting your heels stuck in icky chewing gum might be a thing of the past if Chicza has their way. Available in most health food stores, it’s made from latex from the Mayan rainforest. It’s organic, biodegradable and doesn’t stick. Sadly you can’t blow bubbles but it’s a small price to pay for helping to save one of our most precious resources, the rainforest. The sap is harvested by cooperatives of chicleros and is the first certified organic, 100% natural and biodegradable chewing gum ever made! Visit chicza.com

Karim from Potassium store, potassiumstore.co.uk, not content with having an exclusive with Elle Mcpherson’s fave Laundry Maid jeans, they’ve managed to bag the new diffusion line by Matt & Nat. The pioneers of vegan bags, their back pack Apollo (£105) is to die for (all linings are made from recycled plastic bottles).

I am loving the muse bag and it comes in green and black too! Karim has been delightfully persuaded to extend his 20% discount, when you spend £50 or more including sale items in store and on line. Lasts until 15 May 2010 – Quote ‘Daisy Green offer’ at the checkout both in store or on line.

Did I say vegan or vegetarian? It seems to be the kind of month for both. Check the Beyond Skin bottle top pumps which are now on sale on ASOS exclusively! Also Irregular Choice’s manga inspired, gingham or outer galactic designs in their SS/10 Vegetarian Collection, available in store and online… wicked! Terra plana, terraplana.com,  have a  fab non-Leather range. £1 from the sale price of every pair sold will be donated to Greenpeace in support of their ‘Slaughtering the Amazon’ campaign.

I am particularly fond of the Marti range which features a Choolips print in light brown. There is a 10% offer on Bourgeois Boheme for the new summer range, check out the cute Sri blue pumps! bboheme.com

Can I extract myself from the whole accessories thing…rather!

Eloise Grey’s new garden range collection sees her launch into trousers! Think Thomas Hardy breeches for women, made in Belgian eco linen which is softened in the dew! Romance or what! I have swooned,  tried and bought. Eloise, who is showing in London at the Hepsibah gallery, let me into her winter secret.

She’s designing a new lined dark grey version! A fan of the American Civil War look that will be fever gripping this winter, you can guess what I will be buying for Autumn. eloisegrey.com

Platform is a new restaurant and bar with a licence till 3am. It is situated at Tooley Street, 56-58 London Bridge Run by restaurateur Tony McKinlay and his farmer friend Barnaby Butterfield.

Their aim is to deliver seasonal organic produce in fantastic surroundings. The whole place is kitted out with reclaimed wood furniture, mirrors and lights which are all given a new life. Their mantra is ‘Doing what we can, where we can to reduce our carbonfootprint’. And they do it rather well. Plus there’s some great cocktails. They have promised to name one The Big Swish for our event in June!

Don’t forget Choolips pop up store. It’s open online ’til the end of May and has a really amazing concept. With only 400 exclusive dresses in four weeks. Basically, you choose a style then a print and each week you’re given an update, that way you can follow the whole production cycle from start to finish. Team up with Funkymutts Choolips print bag and Terraplana Marti shoe for a head to toe finish. Now that’s colour! The whole process is going to take two months but with our kinda of weather, probably just in time for summer!

Um anyhow just in case we don’t get a summer I am thinking of painting one whole wall in Banana Smoothie! It’s Dulux new Ecosense paint priced at £19.19. It’s virtually odour free and zero added solvent with a 50% lower carbon footprint! It’s not quite the sun but my gosh it’s gorgeously bright! Enter our giveaway to win some
