10 things to do with a ribbon

Gabrielle Treanor from The Green Gables shares more fab 'make and do' ideas

Ribbon tied cutlery looks super chic

If you’re anything like me, you’ll have a little collection of scraps of ribbon that you’ve saved from presents or the end of a roll because you think they’ll be useful one day. Well, that day may have come!

Here are ten ideas to make use of your ribbon scraps:

1. Next time you want to make your table look a bit special for a meal, try tying cutlery together with ribbon. I think it’s probably more interesting if the ribbon is different for each place setting, and you could add a piece of card with the guest’s name too.

2. Tie a length of ribbon around your head like an Alice band. It’s easiest if you tie it on the top of your head where you can see what you’re doing, and then slide the knot round to the back under your hair.

3. To brighten up a glass, wind skinny ribbon around it, securing both ends with tape. Pop a tea light in and you have an instantly pretty candle holder.

4. If you’re giving a plant or a bunch of flowers as a gift, wrap them in tissue paper and tie with a big bow.

5. If you’re handy with a sewing machine, add a couple of pieces of ribbon to plain fabric and sew a cushion cover to match your décor.

6. A long piece of wide ribbon tied round your waist with a bow at the back or front can be used instead of a belt to give definition to your waist.

7. Make a ribbon brooch or hair slide from ribbon scraps (see previous article).

8. Make yourself a notepad from scrap paper by cutting the sheets to the same size, punch holes along one edge and tie together with ribbon.

9. Use ribbon instead of fabric to make the ties on a child’s apron.

10. Draw a picture, write a message or stick a photo to the front of a homemade card and use ribbon to frame the image or message.
