How to make a map picture

A very special gift idea for Valentine’s Day

Want to make your special someone a personalised present for Valentine’s Day?

Or just need an idea for a gift? This simple make and do can be adapted for all kinds of occasions…

You will need:

  • map showing a place of interest poignant to the person the present is for
  • two pieces of thin recycled white card
  • a picture frame
  • glue
  • sticky pads
  • little pegs or clips
  • scissors

To make:

Decide what shape you want the picture to be. I drew a simple heart on the computer, printed it on a piece of thin card and cut it out. This is your template.

Choose a spot on a map that is special to the person who will receive the present. If you don’t want to cut up the map you can colour photocopy it instead.

Cut out an area a bit bigger than your chosen spot – make sure the template will cover it all. Glue the map to a piece of thin card. (Photo 1 pictured top left in the gallery below)

Place your shape template over this area and hold it in place with a couple of little pegs or clips. (Photo 2 pictured top centre in the gallery below)

Cut out your shape. (Photo 3 pictured top right in the gallery below)

Attach a few sticky pads to the back of your map shape. This will help it stand out a little inside the picture frame giving it a 3D feel. (Photo 4 pictured bottom left in the gallery below)

Cut a piece of card to fit inside your picture frame. Stick the map shape to this piece of card and fit inside your picture frame and admire your handy work! (Photo 5 pictured  bottom centre in the gallery below)
