Make a pretty padded hanger

Another simple, clever and cute gift idea

Pretty and useful

Pretty and useful

I was looking for something to make that was fairly unchallenging the other day when I saw a picture of a padded coat hanger in one of my craft books.

I had the perfect cerise vintage scarf for the job and was able to get finished in about an hour. I was pretty pleased with my first attempt and am working on another as a matching pair.

What you need

  • Wooden coat hanger
  • Padding or scraps of thick material
  • Needle and thread

How to make the hanger

  1. Take your padding and wind it around the hanger. I used one long strip of very thick material, and just wound it around and around until I was satisfied that the hanger was padded enough.
  2. Stitch the padding together to make sure it stays in place.
  3. Take your fabric and lay it over the hanger to make sure it is wide enough. Cut a tiny hole in the fabric and push the hanger hook through it. Your fabric should hang over the ends of the hanger with enough to spare. Cut off the excess.
  4. Pull the fabric tight over the padding and use pins to pin it together under the bottom of the hanger.
  5. Hand stitch the material together as neatly as possible.
  6. Add buttons or corsages for extra decoration if you wish.
