Letting in the light
Use some ethical interior inspiration to eke out the summer
The clocks have gone back and the dark is creeping up on us at an alarming rate. But Suzanne has come to the rescue with some ways to lengthen the days by making the most of the autumn light in your home.
Painting can help you to make the most of any natural light during the day. This could mean you could leave the light off for that bit longer and save precious pennies on electricity bills. Use light colours on walls adjacent to windows to bounce the light around, and then have textures and patterns on the opposite wall. Paler floors and ceilings help too.
Earthborn paints are clay based and are available in a range of 36 colours– ideal for letting walls breathe during those fluctuations of temperature and atmospheric moisture that the seasons, and central heating, bring. Another fantastic colour range comes from Farrow & Ball. They’ve managed to create new eco-friendly formulations without any compromise on performance or the quality of the ingredients used.
In smaller rooms check how much blinds and curtains are covering the windows. You might find they can be moved away from the window more to let in the sunshine. It’s also worth clearing plants like ivy, tree branches, or climbers from around the windows on the outside.
I always get creative at the change of seasons in spring and autumn – it really lifts my mood. Choosing a new lampshade or lighting structure for a room can update its look. We spotted some great solutions in Ecocentric. And new, snuggly bedding is a good investment. How about these from Bamboo Bed Sheets?
Two of my favourites investment pieces come from Rose and Grey- a truly gorgeous vintage sofa and armchair. With aged, distressed leather covering foam and duckdown cushions giving it a lovely worn in look, it’s not only fabulous looking, it’s also incredibly comfortable. And with the cushion from Not On The High Street it will look even more homely.
