Home Swap - a cheap and very cheerful holiday option

Summer’s here and there’s one thought that will have crossed all our minds at some point lately. When’s it holiday time?

The sun is shining and the beach is inviting but travelling these days has become a bit of a no goer with worries of the recession looming and concerns over our carbon footprint. Most people say that they go abroad because the UK doesn’t offer the same luxury for the same price as you get abroad. But Daisy Green just might have stumbled upon a new craze to prove you wrong!

Many of you will know now that we are mad about clothes swapping - it’s the best way to get a new outfit without costing a penny and it’s great for the environment. But why stop at clothes? A cheaper way to stay in the UK this year is Home Swapping.

What is it?
Basically, home swapping is a craze that’s been growing for the last 25 years and involves very little effort. All you do is take a few snaps of your home, upload them to a home swap website and then wait for people to contact you.

You find a match that is looking for what you have to offer and then you look at what they have. You might be a couple living in the city up north and fancy a break in a cottage down south and the couple in the cottage down south might fancy a bit if summer city sightseeing up north so you make contact, exchange details and, voila, you’re on your way!

Costs
The great thing about home swapping is that it’s absolutely free to stay at the other person’s home. Sometimes there are even perks thrown in like a full fridge or bikes in the garage that are free for you to use. The only cost you might incur is the membership fee to a specific home swapping site but that doesn’t have to be very much and can last up to a year, with unlimited swaps available.

Advantages

  • Doing a home swap is a fantastic way to get out and see Britain in an environmentally friendly way – mostly it takes flying out of the equation.
  • It’s a great way to make new friends if you decide to stay in touch with the people you’ve home swapped with.
  • It’s free.
